Young and student marketers: Take a look at the Emerging Marketers Victoria page (go to)

We need your help as a mentor

By Christine Walker AMAMI CPM, President, AMI Victoria Council

Are you an experienced marketing professional? Would you like to help mentor our younger emerging marketers? Well now you can.

The Emerging Marketers group is a well organised and committed group of young marketers who make a great effort to provide their peers with an opportunity to be mentored by more experienced marketers.

We need your help!

Each year the biggest problem is getting enough mentors to participate in the program. So to all those senior marketers out there I’d like to put out a call for your help as a mentor in 2013.

Remember your first few years…

Every senior marketing executive has had someone provide advice and assistance and help them up to the next step at some stage in their career.  I still recall my first day at McCann Erickson as the research assistant. Absolutely no idea.  But my boss sat me down and gave me a marketing 101 lecture. I went home so excited and delighted that I was not just working in an agency, but being educated about marketing (I had a psychology degree). It created so much enthusiasm for market research that I’m still in it many years later.

I’ll be realistic, being mentor is not always a great experience. Some young grads are better to mentor than others, some more reliable, some really need help and assistance, but most are just looking for that first break. The upside is that mentors can make a great difference – even if it’s only encouragement.

So I urge you to give it a go. It may not be fantastic, or it just might be. To find our more, simply drop us an email at emvic@ami.org.au or call the Australian Marketing Institute on 1300 737 445.

Event reports

Jingle and mingle

To close 2012, AMI Victoria hosted a Christmas networking event together with our partners from the Institute of Analytics Professionals Australia. We has a fantastic turnout and those attending the event enjoyed Christmas drinks, a bit of live music, as well bit of 'mingle and jingle'.

Decisions. Data. Discovery

In partnership with Deakin University School of Management and Marketing, we kicked off 2013 with an in-depth and analytical event about data-driven decision making.

The first part of the session began with Brook Carter, Head of Marketing Strategy and Insights from AustralianSuper, who discussed some of the big data insights from the world of industry superannuation. This was accompanied by Gautam Bose, from Customer Analytics and Research in Marketing at NAB, who gave an insightful presentation about using data and analytics effectively to make marketing decisions. The last speaker, who provided a technological view of analytics and data, was Skev Ioannou, Market Segment Manager from IBM.

Overall, the session was extremely well received by members, with many participating in question time as well as staying after the session to ask more in-depth questions. Thank you to our speakers and to Deakin University for its support and for allowing us to participate.

Brave marketing, brave discussions

Leading up to the 'Brave Marketing' event held on 21 February, it was touted being about “embracing fear”, and for many Victorian AMI members they did not leave this session disappointed.

The session opened up with many brave and well… dynamic conversations. This was met with an overwhelmingly positive reception from members, particularly for Tim Burrows from Mumbrella, who showcased an amazing talent for moderating a dynamic panel. Panel speakers included Michael Logos, Richard Overall, Chris Stephenson, Cameron MacFarlane and Laura Chisholm.

There were lots of colourful eruptions of conversation, discussing everything from omi-channels to channel marketing. Thank you everyone for your lively contribution.
